Dead
to Rights
By Robert Gold
Robert
L. Gold’s historical novel Dead to Rights is the first in his
Colonial Cities mystery series
Dead to Rights is a fascinating and entertaining historical
novel set primarily in colonial Savannah. The plot revolves around a
series of murders so brutal that Justice of the Peace James Morgan is
aghast at the killer’s method and motive. As the murders continue, a
pattern develops as Morgan chases evidence from Savannah to St.
Augustine to Havana. The mystery unfolds in a well defined historical
context of colonial America. Author and historian Robert Gold sprinkles
historical details throughout the book. Details of the era include
conversation, politics, housing, city structure, food, clothing, travel,
and a trove of Spanish bullion that disappeared from a shipwreck and
turns up in the possession of some suspect citizens of Savannah. As the
mystery unravels and the motive becomes clear, Morgan finds himself with
some sympathies with the killer and does not to pursue the case.
This book is a good read and a good historical portrait of colonial
American by a noted historian.
