Another Day, Otro Dia
by Kathleen E. Suits-Smith
Another
Day, Otro Dia portrays the dairy farming industry in rural
New York and the important role of immigrants in agricultural
production. The story revolves around Peggy Stewart’s efforts to keep
her family’s dairy operation going while her husband deals with
terminal cancer. Unable to perform the exhausting tasks required in
dairy farming, she turns to a Mexican imigrant for help. While he
proves a noble and hard working man, he and fellow migrant workers are
shunned, cheated and mistreated by other farmers who depend on them.
The book’s portrayal of the contribution of migrant workers in
America’s food production is in stark contrast to the image of
migrants we see daily spewing from the White House. The book also
focuses on the ethical divide between the humanistic farmer and the
traditional farmer whose brutality toward migrants and domestic
animals is portrayed in painful detail. As Peggy Stewart salvages her
dairy farm with the help, support and love from the Mexican worker
Rio, other forces begin to undermine her success. This book is a good
read and a window into the dairy farming by an author who knows the
subject well.
